What’s the deal with facial oils and why do you need to use one?

When you hear the words “oil” and “skin” in the same sentence, it’s not usually a good thing, right?

But did you know that oil (the right oil) can actually treat many skin issues, including reactive skin, rosacea, and even oily skin! Sounds contradictory?

Allow us to explain.

First of all, what are facial oils?

Facial oils are usually plant-based (our Facial Oils are plant-based, organic and contain 4 or 5 potent ingredients - no fillers or nasties).

Facial oils are typically derived from the various parts of plants — flowers, leaves, roots, etc. And since they can include a range of potent ingredients, the potential benefits are endless.

Facial oils are emollients, which essentially soften dry, rough, flakey skin. When the top layer of your skin doesn’t contain enough water, it dries out. This causes the skin to crack and flake off, leaving open spaces between the cells in your skin. Emollients fill those spaces with fatty substances, called lipids, which make your skin smoother and softer.

So how would facial oils benefit your skin?

Put simply, our skin naturally produces a protective layer of oils and lipids, which help prevent water loss from our skin and keep it hydrated. This layer is called the acid mantle. Facial oils are substances that help complement our natural oils, repair the acid mantle and protect your skin from moisture loss, external invaders such as dirt and bacteria, and help balance your own oil production, and maintain your skins natural pH levels.

Or perhaps think of the skin as a brick wall - the skin cells are the bricks and the oils and lipids are the mortar. The mortar holds the bricks together in place and prevents anything from seeping through. Face oils are considered a type of emollient, which means they help strengthen the outer layer of your skin — the stratum corneum — by softening and sealing it, preventing water loss.

When should you use a facial oil in your skincare routine?

Every day! Morning and night is best. We recommend using it after you cleanse (with a cleansing oil) and before your serum.
