8 ways to change up your skincare for summer

There are essential parts of your skincare routine that should remain constant throughout the year. In saying that, the change of seasons brings different conditions that can affect your skin.

It’s a good idea to consider a few changes to help your skin adjust and deal with these changes gracefully and with minimal adverse reactions.

Get your fix of Vitamin D - safely!

The gorgeous summer weather inevitably leads to longer time spent outdoors, so make sure to always apply sunscreen before enjoying that sunshine. Sunscreen is the best form of protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays, guarding your skin against sun damage, signs of aging, hyperpigmentation and reducing the risk of skin cancer.

Remember to reapply every two hours!

    Opt for a light hydrator

During winter, you have probably been using a heavier moisturiser to combat the dry air.

Spring and summer bring higher humidity in the air, allowing the skin to better retain moisture, making thick creams unnecessary. A lighter, water-based serum will provide the right level of moisture for warmer weather without clogging pores and causing breakouts.

Check out our Dream Serums here for oily skin or dry skin.

    Remove dull winter skin

As we mentioned above, dry skin is a common side effect of winter, but the dull appearance from a buildup of dead skin cells does not have to continue into summer.

As the days warm up, make it a priority to gently exfoliate on a regular basis. Be careful not to over-exfoliate as this can create more problems than the ones it solves. Start with only once or twice a week - and don’t exfoliate right before exposure to the sun, as exfoliation makes the skin more sensitive. The best time is right before bed.

    Add an antioxidant-rich serum

Sun exposure triggers premature aging and increases the risk of skin cancer, making topical antioxidants a must-have for for healthy, youthful-looking skin.

Why? Antioxidants neutralize destructive free radicals (by donating an electron to the unstable free radical), which develop from things like car exhaust and daily pollution, ultraviolet rays from the sun, emotional and physical stress, and processed foods.

Research has shown that topical use of antioxidants can provide additional protection from free radical damage; slow the visible signs of skin aging; be photo-protective, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-carcinogenic; and improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, facial redness, and hyperpigmentation or brown spots.

Both of our Goodieco Trios contain high percentages of Vitamins A, C and E, all potent antioxidants.

If you’re looking for an extra boost of antioxidants and anti-aging action, the Ageless Routine includes both Bakuchiol (the natural alternative to retinol with a potent Vitamin A concentration) and POW, the powder form of CoEnzyme Q10.

    Spring clean

Take some time to clean out expired beauty and skincare products and thoroughly clean makeup brushes and applicators. Expired products and dirty brushes can increase the risk of bacteria buildup and cause a number of unwanted skin issues, such as breakouts.

Change of cleanser may be in order

At the end of any warm day spent out in the sun, you’re likely to have a shinier complexion from extra perspiration. Before oil, dirt, and the residue left from sweaty makeup can clog your pores be sure to cleanse your skin. An oil cleanser designed for oily or acne-prone skin, like this one, is an effective method for removing dirt and impurities without over-drying your skin.

    Ease up on makeup

Sweating during summer is usually unavoidable! This can lead to clogged pores and breakouts, underneath thick heavy foundations and concealers.

Consider using lighter products such as a tinted moisturiser, or even just your own gorgeous skin! Many of our Goodieco babes have ditched the makeup since using their Goodieco Trio.

    Refresh with a spritz

A good facial mist can refresh your complexion without requiring you to wash your face before the day is through. Rather than wiping off drops of sweat with dirty hands, try a facial mist with deep hydrating properties and a good dose of Vitamin C, like our Hydro Essence.
